Outreach
“Love cannot remain by itself — it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service.”
St. Teresa of Calcutta
The Outreach Program at Our Lady of Tahoe Church began in 1992 to assist ten families, and 2022 is our 30th anniversary. Since then, it has grown to help 80 families in the South Shore of Lake Tahoe—over 400 local people (250 adults and 150 children). We also assist an additional 1-3 families on a “waitlist” each month with extra food we may have to distribute. We provide supplemental food boxes monthly; boxes containing eggs, cheese, fresh vegetables, canned goods, meat, tortillas which constitutes a balanced diet! We currently have over 25 volunteers who help distribute the food into the boxes the second Friday of each month (9 AM-11:30 AM) and the following Saturday (8:30 AM-10:30 AM). Our families come to our parish hall to receive their food boxes.
Our monthly budget is about $2,000.00 spent on food purchases at wholesale prices from Bonanza Produce and local businesses. We also purchase food at discounted prices from the Food Bank of Northern NV, and the Food Bank delivers it to our parking lot every month. The Food Bank also brings donated fruits & vegetables, bread, and meats from many supermarkets in the Reno/Sparks area on delivery day.
Our Outreach Program also assists with:
*Education: we distribute books that are age-appropriate to the Outreach children during the year.
*Medical: Insurance information is given out to our families as needed.
*Dental: Toothbrushes and toothpaste are given out two times/year.
*Christmas: Outreach places a Sharing Tree in our church for parishioners and visitors to donate toward gift cards for our Outreach children.
*Household Items: clothing, towels, sheets, blankets are collected for families and distributed. In the fall each year, we also have a coat drive.
Our Outreach Program continues because of the generous donations from parishioners and visitors to our parish.
