Scripture Class

Father Oliver holds Scripture Class on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM in the parish hall. The classes typically run for about an hour-and-a-half. Usually, about a dozen people attend these class. It's a comfortable and informal environment, and all are welcome. This class is a great way to enjoy and learn from Father Oliver. While we do read the Bible, Father Oliver spends a great deal of time explaining it to us. His insights are invaluable, and he is the reason most people attend this class.

We are currently studying the Book of Revelation. In recent months, we have studied several books of the bible, including Acts of the Apostles, Genesis, Exodus, the Epistle to the Romans and the Gospel of Luke. We have also studied a couple of programs by Father Robert Barron's Word on Fire ministry.

Acts of the Apostles - Often referred to simply as Acts, it is the fifth book of the New Testament; it tells of the founding of the Christian church and the spread of its message to the Roman Empire.

Genesis - The first book of the Old Testament, it tells of how God created the world. It also tells the stories of Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel). The book ends by explaining how the children of Israel descended into Egypt.

Exodus - The second book of the Old Testament, it tells how the Israelites left slavery in Egypt through the strength of Yahweh, the God who chose Israel as his people. Led by their prophet Moses, they journeyed through the wilderness to Mount Sinai, where Yahweh promised them the land of Canaan (the "Promised Land") in return for their faithfulness. Israel entered into a covenant with Yahweh who gave them their laws and instructions for the Tabernacle, the means by which he dwelt with them and lead them to the land, and gave them peace.

Epistle to the Romans - Often shortened to Romans, it is the sixth book of the New Testament. Biblical scholars agree that it was composed by the Apostle Paul to explain that salvation is offered through the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the longest of the Pauline epistles and is considered his "most important theological legacy."

The Beatitudes - Eight blessings in the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. Each is a proverb-like proclamation, without narrative, cryptic, precise, and full of meaning. Each one includes a topic that forms a major biblical theme. Four of the blessings also appear in the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke, and these are followed by four woes which mirror the blessings.

Gospel of Luke - The third and longest of the four canonical Gospels, it tells of the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ.

Book of Revelation - The only example of the apocalyptic tradition in the New Testament.

Gospel of John - The fourth Gospel, it begins with the witness and affirmation of John the Baptist and concludes with the death, burial, resurrection, and post-resurrection appearances of Jesus.

Parables of Jesus - Can be found in all the Gospels, except for John, and in some of the non-canonical gospels, but are located mainly within the three Synoptic Gospels.
