Confraternity of Christian Doctrine

CCD

Religious Education is Our Lady of Tahoe's ministry dealing with educational programs in the parish. The principal program is CCD, the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, which is often simply called catechism. CCD developed out of the Council of Trent, which directed the education of the youth of the Church to help address protestant errors.

Today, CCD helps align the religious education of children who attend secular schools, with the religion classes found in parochial schools, and generally runs concurrently with the school year. The most obvious purpose of CCD is to prepare its students for the reception of the Sacraments of Penance, the Eucharist, and Confirmation, but more importantly, it prepares them to live sacramental lives as Catholics beyond their first Communion, Confirmation, et cetera.

Understanding the faith in a thorough and cogent fashion provides a foundation for remaining within the Church throughout life, just as a shallow or non-existent understanding will lead to superficial adherence at best. Similarly, the example set by parents, both in providing religious education (CCD and at home), and in demonstrating a vibrant faith life will encourage in their children an interest, belief, and participation in the Church, while a poor example will diminish them.

For adults interested in joining the Church there is the RCIA program (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). RCIA classes are typically conducted when there are a handful of adults who wish to be accepted into the Church. It consists of a period of inquiry, which is a time to learn the basics about the Church, and to discern whether the students, called inquirers or pre-catechumens, wish to continue. If so, they become catechumens (or candidates if they're already baptised), and undertake prayer, deeper study, and periodically join the faithful for certain rites and blessings. This culminates at the Easter Vigil, where the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation) are received.

Where there are insufficient numbers to fill an RCIA group, individuals may join one at a nearby parish or work on an individual basis with the pastor in a process similar to formal RCIA. Anyone wishing to join or learn more about the Catholic Church should fill out email on this page, or contact the office for more information.

Our Lady of Tahoe also has other educational opportunities not directly related to formal catechesis, including regular Scripture Classes, Lectio Divina (informal, and largely meditative development of the faith through scripture), and others as membership permits (please contact the office or see the ministries page for current groups).
